The beloved lesbian film classic GO FISH turns 20 this year and SIFF Cinema is screening it on Friday with star/writer GUINEVERE TURNER on hand.
YIKES! It’s the 20th Anniversary of the “seminal” lesbian film GO FISH!!!???
How is that possible?
(And, is the word “seminal” an appropriate word to use in describing a lesbian film?)
Regardless, the film is a Queer Cinema classic for everyone appreciative of the genre and the star/co-screenwriter/co-producer of the film, GUINEVERE TURNER will be in Seattle later this week for multiple visits to SIFF Cinema at The Uptown. Ms Turner will be on hand on Friday, April 18 for a special anniversary screening of GO FISH at 6:30pm. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with University of Washington Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Cinema Studies Jennifer Bean. Get tickets here.(It’s only $11 for the public/$6 for SIFF members$8 for Three Dollar Bill Cinema members with code: $3*SIFF)And, here’s a brief synopsis of the film if it’s been awhile since you’ve viewed it:
Originally screening in SIFF 1994, Go Fish was a groundbreaking, hip, low-budget comedy that celebrated lesbian culture on all levels, and launched the career of director Rose Troche and co-writer and star Guinevere Turner. Max (Turner) is starting to get desperate after not having a date in 10 months. Then her roommate fixes her up with the introverted and celibate Ely (V.S. Brodie). After much scheming by their friends, these two lonely-hearts come together during a brilliant seduction scene (one word: nail-clippers), and discover the joys of great sex, sensual pleasure, and simply being together.
On Saturday, Guinevere will return for a “Film Craft Commentary” to discuss her process of adapting Bret Easton Ellis’ extremely controversial novel, AMERICAN PSYCHO into a film for director Mary Harron. That seminar is happening at 1pm. More about the series:
Film Craft Commentary is a monthly series devoted to deepening audience appreciation as professional film artists provide live audio commentary about their craft throughout a film of their choice. Each session of Film Craft Commentary will begin with an introduction to the artist’s craft and conclude with an opportunity to interact with the artist through questions and answers.
Grab tickets to this event here…and, prices are the same as for the “Go Fish” screening.
And, a bit more bio for the delightful Ms Turner:
Guinevere Turner is a writer, director and actor who has been working in film and TV since her 1994 debut film Go Fish, which she co-wrote, produced and starred in. Her acting roles include parts in The Watermelon Woman, Chasing Amy,American Psycho and Treasure Island. She teamed up with director Mary Harron to write the films American Psycho and The Notorious Bettie Page. She was a writer and story editor on Showtime’s “The L Word”, and she played a recurring character on that show. She has written and directed five short films, two of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. She is currently working on raising money to direct feature film she wrote, called Creeps.
For film lovers and filmmakers, these events are a must not miss treat.
Unless AMERICAN PSYCHO freaks you the hell out…’cause, well, it’s pretty damn freaky. Albeit brilliantly so.
