Show Off Your Junk, er, TREASURES At The Objects of Pride Showcase

March 1, 2024• byMichael Strangeways

We all have bits of memorabilia tucked away in drawers and cupboards…beloved treasures of our past that remind us of fun times when we were younger and more limber and able to drink huge quantities of things we shouldn’t. Nowadays, meany of those keepsake moments could be digital photos lurking on your hard drive but some of us are pack rats that keep useless but endearing tat…well, now is your opportunity to show off that crap at Seattle Pride’s upcoming event, OBJECTS OF PRIDE SHOWCASE happening at the GenPride Center from 11am to 2pm on Wednesday March 27th…which is an odd time for an event but since it’s at GenPride Center and it’s all about bringing in your old treasures, I guess this is an event maybe only meant for older folks but…

Still a weird time for an event, if you ask me. I’m old and I ain’t got time to schlep up the Hill at 11am on a Wednesday…but, I digress.

Here’s all the poo:

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Seattle Pride celebrations by taking a trip down memory lane with the Objects of Pride Showcase hosted at GenPride Center (1521 Broadway) from 11am – 2pm on Wednesday, March 27.

The free event is a fun takeoff on TV’s popular Antiques Roadshow, with a queer twist. Bring your favorite artifacts, memorabilia, or photos capturing queer life – and have them reviewed by MOHAI Executive Director Leonard Garfield and Chief of Exhibits and Interpretation Devorah Romanek who will discuss items and their historical significance. Attendees can peruse a gallery of curated LGBTQIA+ memorabilia (open to the public at GenPride Center through April 12).

The event will commence with an exploration of Seattle’s Queer History through the decades, led by MOHAI Executive Director Leonard Garfield. This will be followed by Rosette Royale, writer, storyteller and curator of the AIDS Memorial Pathway. You’re invited to join us as we delve into Seattle’s rich queer history from 50 years ago and beyond – honoring the people and places which helped to expel shame, create unity, honor diversity, and achieve equal human rights.

Objects of Pride: A Queer Antiques Roadshow launches a call for digital submissions (through April) for MOHAI’s online showcase, Objects of Pride, which runs mid-May through July 4 in recognition of National LGBTQIA+ Pride Month (June).

The event – presented by Seattle Pride, MOHAI, and GenPride – also includes a preview of this year’s Seattle Pride 50th anniversary festivities and this year’s theme “NOW!” in honor of the original rallying cry for the recognition of Seattle’s LGBTQIA+ community.

Here’s a glimpse of what to expect:

10:30 am: Doors Open
11:00 am: Discussion on Seattle’s LGBTQIA+ History
Noon to 2 pm: Objects of Pride Showcase

In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
