Tonight, Melissa Ferrick plays two shows at Triple Door – 7pm & 10pm. The openly gay folk-rock singer returns to Seattle.
Ferrick’s big break came in 1991 at the age of 21, when she landed a last-second addition as the opening act for Morrissey. Her career began to take off from there but it was not until a few years later that she revealed that she was a lesbian to her fans.
She spoke about facing up to the issue with her family:
I came out to my parents in therapy. My mom said, ‘I thought either you were gonna drop out of school or you were gay.’ I was thinking, ‘Which one is worse?’
Spinner has an breif interview with Melissa about coming out.
She will be performing with Jill Sobule, who is famous for songs such as the original “I Kissed A Girl” from 1995 and Supermodel from the movies Clueless.
Go to Melissa Ferrick’s MySpace page to listen to her excellent acoustic cover of the song Glycerine, originally from the band Bush.
Tickets to tonight’s show at Triple Door are $20.
