Even though it’s Oscar Weekend and you’re busy planning your Oscar Party, or what you’re going to WEAR to the fancy party you’re going to, (for a list of events, scroll down the page for the Oscar Party post; I’m not repeating it here, ’cause I’m tired of beating THAT dead horse…) you can actually GO to a real movie this weekend, and there are a lot to choose from, ranging from the sublime to the even more sublime…
Tonight, for ONE NIGHT ONLY, the Rawstock film festival of short films returns to Seattle for its sixth annual event and it’s being held at ACT at 8:30pm and tickets are only $10…and what IS Rawstock? (no, it’s not a festival of raw gay sex films…) I’ll resort to our dear friend, Mr Blockquote to help you out:
The RAWSTOCK FilmFest was launched in 2004 as a showcase for raw, irreverent local filmmakers. Conceived by Seattle natives William Russell and Justin Freet as a reaction to the dearth of attention given local indie filmmakers and their films, RAWSTOCK also acted as a carrot for these filmmakers to complete their projects in the first place.
There are eleven films screening tonight, including David Lobser’s “Elephant Girl”, Darrius Scheider’s “The Schlockmann Method” and Spencer Susser’s “I Love Sarah Jane” which Charles Mudede liked in The Stranger this week (the picture at the top is a shot from this film) and which coincidentally stars Mia Wasikowska who also stars as….
Alice in Tim Burton’s CGI blessed/cursed adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland which explodes on theaters this weekend with Johnny Depp as Carrot Top/Elijah Wood, Helena Bonham-Carter as Tim Burton’s BabyMamma and the chubby gay guy from “Little Britain” as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. It promises to either be divine or dreck, which is par for the course with Tim Burton’s films…
Anything called The GI Joe Stop Motion Film Festival MUST be fabulous. It’s playing at the Grand Illusion tonight and I would LOVE to go to this, but it’s not an option since it’s for ONE NIGHT ONLY!!! Lame. But, the movie sounds way cool…Also cool, Terry Gilliam’s masterpiece Brazil playing the Midnight show at the Egyptian tonight and tomorrow. If you don’t like this movie, we can NOT be friends and you have no soul and you’re probably bad in bed…as for The Goonies Quote Along playing tonight, Saturday and Sunday night after their Oscar Party ends at Central Cinema, I have no comment because I don’t really LIKE this movie but I understand that it is of vital importance to many people born between 1970 and 1980 so I won’t badmouth it much except to say, “yech”…Finally, a reminder that the Seattle Jewish Film Festival opens next Thursday, and we’ll have more to say on that early next week, AND, Pretty in Pink the huge annual fundraiser/banquet/party for Three Dollar Bill cinema, the lovely folks behind the Seattle LGBT Film Festival is coming up on March 26th, AND don’t forget to go see Prodigal Sons playing at SIFF Cinema this week, because it really is several shades of awesome….That’s all…Oh, and go watch the Oscars, because if you don’t, then you are apparently some kind of Communist…
