Chely Wright and someone who is obviously not her boyfriend, pose for a fan picture.
Country singer Chely Wright is the “big” celebrity outing that People magazine has been hinting about for weeks. Her Outage insures that she will get gigs for the rest of her life at “WomynFests” and Pride Events…good for her! But, I have to admit I was hoping for a dude and someone who is actually famous. My “Oh, just get it over with, and why wait until you get outed after you die list” was hoping it was going to be Anderson, or Jake, or John, or Bradley, or George, or Will, or….
Don't brush her completely aside, though. That's a courageous move for a country artist (who did have a couple hits btw)
We are seeing gay representation in most sports and most other genres of music. But country music needed an issue with this. A star country fans know, (and a pretty one, doesn't hurt). It might sweep aside some stereotypes, open some minds. And maybe just maybe we'll see some others come out. (rumors still plague Kenny Chesney)
1)Yeah, that was a little snarkier than it needed to be…
2)But, I do have a slight problem when "celebrities" come out for monetary purposes…The whole "well, my career isn't doing so well so it might make sense FINANCIALLY to come out of the closet" does rankle me.
Just because you have a hopeless crush on a male celebrity and you're desperately hoping for them to come out….
She's actually kindofabigdeal in the country music world, which y'all don't know much about in Seattle, but in much of the rest of the country she's pretty well known. Just because YOU didn't get a People magazine deal is no reason to be bitter.
And it's a big deal, because it's country music, and it will force all of her fans in the "Real America" (TM) to either decide that it's not a big deal (thereby accepting her and her sexuality), or that they will burn her records in the street. I'm guessing the former, which is a step forward for the rest of us. You see, we're becoming a non-issue, and every single person that comes out is a step in the right direction.
Also, your presumption that she did this for "monetary" reasons is completely baseless. You're just being a bitter, gossipy twit, and if the homophobes ruin her career, she would have made a lot more money by staying in the closet. Stop taking the bitter pills, and maybe just every so often get out of Seattle for a peek at the rest of the country.
Ouch.
1)I'm very happy for her and it IS important that a country star is coming out, but let's face it…she's not Shania Twain.
2)A major MALE leading man coming out, would also be of vital importance. As for "wishful thoughts" on my part, I'm not a deluded nitwit who dreams that a celebrity is coming to my door to make passionate love to me…
3)I would LOOOOOVE to get out of Seattle for awhile! Are you paying my airfare and putting me up? Hopefully, you live some place "fun" and by fun, I mean, not Houston…
4)Who's bitter? Who's gossipy? I'm just repeating the news of the day!
Sheesh!
"Yawn…Someone you've never heard of, comes out of the closet and People thinks it is a big deal…"
"I have to admit I was hoping for a dude and someone who is actually famous. My "Oh, just get it over with, and why wait until you get outed after you die list" was hoping it was going to be Anderson, or Jake, or John, or Bradley, or George, or Will, or…."
EVERY person that comes out is important. EVERY SINGLE PERSON. So she's not Shania Twain. Should she just shut up and stay in the closet? You're acting bored because she's not a major celebrity. Maybe she should get some credit because she's been through a long process of accepting her sexuality, and instead of hiding it for the sake of her career, she's putting it out there. Maybe the tired queens waiting for bigger and better are something she could do without. You're not just "repeating the news of the day". You're doing it with an attitude of "oh, honey, you're not important, move along". It's just soooo tired. Give the girl her props. We're not all so blessed as to be born Michael Strangeways, Queen of the World.
