Sigh…Dan Savage is leading a campaign aimed at LGBT youth to prevent suicide and despair for kids coping with persecution from peers and family, but that kind of harassment isn’t confined to kids or Americans for that matter…Bollywood film star Yuvraaj Parashar has been disowned by his family for acting in the first Indian film to deal with homosexual themes and relationships. Dunno Y … Na Jaane Kyun is being called India’s “Brokeback Mountain” and it’s been both praised and condemned by Indian audiences and critics as alternatively, a bold step for tolerance or an abomination against traditional Indian values. (That sounds familiar…)
Mr. Parahar’s father told the press:
“I feel what he has done is against the culture and tradition of our country and it challenges the purity of the relationship between a man and a woman. He kept us in the dark right from when he signed the film and told us that he is acting with a girl. When we heard about the poster and the things he has done in the film, we were shocked, hurt and humiliated. People will make fun of us and we won’t be able to live peacefully ever again.”
Boo-fawkin-hoo, Pops…People are going to make fun of you; my heart weeps for your pain…Making fun of your son and your family for PLAYING a gay character is asinine. Making fun of your son for his Liza Minelli hairstyle is unavoidable…

We haven’t heard of an American release date for “Dunno Y…” but I’m guessing it’ll be showing up in film festivals next year. And, like most Bollywood films, I’m guessing it’ll be three hours long and feature a dozen musical numbers and complicated dance routines to “BollyPop” music. Sounds dreamy!
