Don’t forget about this unique one-time opportunity. The Seattle Gay News talks about the legend, Joey Arias, that will be performing at The Triple Door on Wednesday April 9, 2008.
Joey Arias will be channeling Billie Holiday in his show Strange Fruit at Triple Door in Seattle on Wednesday April 9, 2008.
Joey’s long and diverse career has changed the way many people look at drag performance, and bridged the worlds of pop music, art and fashion decades before such things were the norm. He went to New York in the mid-70’s and quickly became a fixture and began performing in clubs, most notably with Klaus Nomi, the New Wave Teutonic diva, and later joined both David Bowie and Iggy Pop on world stages. In the late 80’s, Joey began “channeling” his idol Billie Holiday onstage, in a chilling vocal impersonation that has been seen on countless stages over the years.
It’s been 18 years since Joey’s Seattle debut and as expected he has been dazzling the world with his beautiful voice. From Carnegie Hall to the Edinburg Fringe Festival. The Las Vegas Journal awarded Joey “Diva of the Strip” over Celine Dion. He has sung with David Bowie, and was a collaborator with the late Klaus Nomi. Oh and I forgot Andy Warhol, but let’s just leave it at that.
Film credits include Pee Wee Herman; Mondo in New York, Wigstock The Movie; To Wong Foo… Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar; Lipstick; Flawless; Drunks; Seed and many other movies along with many performances live and on television.
“In a time when a man has only to put on a dress to get an Oscar nomination or recording contract…Joey is a rare commodity.”
