Dropped in on Drag Idol for a bit this evening and the show was much better than I had expected. They really put in a lot detail to the whole concept right down to the feedback from the three judges, one of which has a British accent. I wish more people would go out to enjoy it. It was a decent sized crowd but still lots of room for more. Personally, after watching 15 years of drag shows I am pretty tired of the traditional concept but I definitely feel a more modern day vibe with this production.
I have to admit that Ryan Hazy, who you would have thought would look better as a peacock with pink and white tail feathers, was actually kind of funny and he was quickly able to pull out some sassy one-liners throughout the show. Overall I could tell from the faces in the audience that most were entertained.
There was comedy from Miss Jayla D’Foxx from Ohio, Miss Jade had an amazing costume and a number from Avenue Q. Makayla did a great job as Cher and Sandra Dee and Kinnith was impressive as Tom Jones, and Vera Fierce well…need we say more?
What’s nice is the show starts relatively early in the night (9 pm), unlike the old days when drag shows started at midnight and primarily drew people in the service industry, students and the under-employed. I would certainly go back again but this time I would probably want to follow the action from the very first show and get to know the drag queens by seeing them perform each week.
Next week’s theme is ROCK & ROLL in round one and in Round two they have to choose from Roxy’s Greatest hits. Don’t miss it!
Drag Idol is 9 pm every Thursday night at Neighbours Underground until the final on May 1st. Because of its success there is already talk about bringing it back again during the summer.
