Last week’s show (on July 15) had a comedy theme. And I do not think I have ever laughed so hard seeing a drag show. There was everything: from Erika Badu mothering a baby onstage, to This is My Life (performed by Vera Fierce). The show is not your typical “Drag Show.” It has twists and turns each week. Next Week’s theme will be Ryan Hazy’s Favorite Artists. The contestants have to choose between a list of 8 artists pre-selected by host Ryan Hazy.
Ryan Hazy also announced that Season Three will begin immediately following Season Two. So if you are looking to win some cash, and know how to dress in drag, auditions for next season begin on August 26th.
I asked Ryan Hazy what is it that fascinates him about creating and hosting a show like this? Ryan Hazy said “Well, to tell the truth. I used to hate drag queens and kings with a passion until I finally realized what it was like to dress in drag. I can now relate to what the queens have to do each week. It’s not easy. I also find that I have come to make so many new friends as the show progresses. That is what I like about drag shows. The friendship.” What a spirited comment.
Ryan Hazy then informed me that it was a TIE this week for who will be sent home. So the two contestants who will go HEAD 2 HEAD at the beginning of the evening in front of the audience and the judges. This means that they have to perform without audience voting. It’s all up to the judges this time. Ryan Hazy said that “This makes it hard for these two contestants (Kay Sedia & Sir Awesome). They are very scared and will have to work twice as hard to convince the judges that they are good enough for the competition.”
In regards to the Controversy. It happened in Season One. Now it comes again in Season Two. Miss Kay Sedia came out as a beat up Tina Turner and Judge Demene Hall did not take it well. She stated “That song came out after Ike and her broke up. Why are you even daring to do something so offensive? I am offended by this performance.” Reportedly, Kay Sedia then stormed off the stage and said to Ryan Hazy “I can’t do this. I can’t do this.” The other judges then spoke as well regarding their thoughts and agreeing with what Demene Hall had to say. But get this. Kay Sedia then returned to the stage and found herself arguing with the judges as to why her number was not OK but Sir Awesome performing as Whitney Houston on Crack was OK.
What it seemed to boil down to was that there is a big difference between self inflicting pain and domestic violence.
So if you missed that whole thing. You probably want to go out on Tuesday night and see the show that everyone is talking about. I think it will only get better from here. The season is shaping up to be fun and there is still 5 more weeks left before they crown the winner. Will it be a Drag King or a Drag Queen? You can only decide if go to the show!
Drag Idol is every Tuesday Night @ Neighbours Underground (1509 Broadway). You can view the list at www.seattledragidol.com/artistlist.htm.
