Here’s footage from Thursday’s big storm:
Couple of things to point out: 1)Sadly, it looks like one person was killed by the storm and there was considerable damage; condolences to those affected… 2)As a Nebraska boy I can empathize with the New Yorkers that went through this…storms like that are pretty common in the Midwest; at least 2 or 3 per year, but regardless of how many times you’ve experienced it, it’s both scary as hell as well as exhilerating. Every Midwesterner I meet in Seattle usually admits that they sort of miss a good ole fashioned, rock the house thunderstorm once in awhile…nature’s fury does make you feel happy to be alive…3)But, to all you Pacific Northwest natives, THAT is what pouring rain looks like…as a Midwesterner, I am irritated when locals remark that it is “pouring outside!” and I look out and it’s a simple rain shower! Pouring indicates it is coming down in SHEETS and BUCKETS and you can’t see your hand in front of your face because it’s raining so hard. I’ve seen that happen around here about twice, in ten years, and it lasted about a minute, TOPS. Take a trip to the other side of the Rockies once in awhile and get some perspective!
Many people forget that a twister appeared in NYC in 1978. Happily, Diana Ross, Toto and 20 miles of yellow Congoleum made it out ok. Sadly, Nipsey Russell, Michael Jackson and Lena Horne are still dead and won’t be “Easin’ on Down the Road” any time soon…we miss them.
