Not a lot of deets but Seattle Theatre Group announced that the feminist/queer Russian activist band PUSSY RIOT is coming back to Seattle for a gig at Chop Suey on March 22, 2018. This is a 21+ gig. Tickets HERE.
Oddly enough, the punk group will stick around for another day and do a gig at the all ages Vera Project at Seattle Center the following night, March 23rd. Tickets for THAT show…HERE!
Pussy Riot or members of the collective group have visited Seattle yearly for the last few years with shows at The Neptune in 2016 and at The Crocodile in 2017.
To refresh your jaded, drugged, drunk memories, here’s the down low on Pussy Riot from a 2016 press release:
PUSSY RIOT is a Russian feminist punk protest group based in Moscow. Founded in August 2011, they have risen to global visibility over the last several years by staging unauthorized provocative guerrilla performances in unusual public locations. These performances are edited into music videos and posted on the Internet, as well as reported on widely by international media. Their lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom they regard as a dictator, and links between Putin and the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2012, in a controversial ruling, three of the group members were jailed for hooliganism.
Upon their release from prison in 2013 as part of a number of pardons issued by the Russian government just before the Sochi Winter Olympics, Pussy Riot members Nadya Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina founded Zona Prava (Zone of Rights), an international NGO whose goal is to aid those who may be deprived of liberty in camps and prisons, but are not willing to be stripped of their dignity.
