Seattle Vigil Set For Nex Benedict On March 3rd

February 29, 2024• byMichael Strangeways

Seattle community groups have organized a vigil for Nex Benedict, the 16 year old nonbinary Oklahoma student who died after being assaulted in their high school bathroom on February 7th. The event will be held Monday, March 4th at the new GenPride Center at 1521 Broadway starting at 6pm.

UPDATE: EVENT MOVED TO NEW SPACE TO ACCOMODATE MORE PEOPLE:

Join us this Monday, March 4th, as Gathered in This Place and Seattle Pride come together to host a vigil in loving memory of Nex Benedict (Choctaw), a 16-year-old nonbinary teenager from Oklahoma, who tragically lost their life after an assault in a school restroom. The vigil, welcoming all 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and allies, will be held at the Intellectual House (4249 Little Canoe Channel NE, Seattle, WA 98105) on University of Washington’s Campus.

More info on the event:

The vigil, welcoming all 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and allies, will be held at the GenPride Center (1521 Broadway, Seattle, WA) between 6pm and 8pm.

This space will be led by Indigenous 2SLGBTQIA+ elders, organized by Gathered In This Place. Our team is honored to support Gathered In This Place in their mission to “gather, center, and prioritize our Indigenous Two Spirit, queer and gender diverse relatives in affirming and culturally-rooted spaces to create community, build solidarity, and foster community pride”.

This space is designed to affirm and center the Indigiqueer and Two Spirit community. Non-Indigenous community members and allies are welcome to attend this event. However, they are asked to create space for Indigenous community members to connect and grieve collectively.

Please RSVP to join us in honoring Nex’s memory and taking necessary action to support and protect queer youth.
