WARNING: If you haven’t watched the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, there be SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!
Enough about the local drag queen scene and more about those contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race because it’s that time of the week with a new episode review of our favorite reality TV competition show with the unusual suspects. The object of this week’s challenge is something that comes quite natural to me to analyze and critique: Acting. The dolls are split into two teams to prepare a short sitcom trailer involving squirrels and nuts. (Side note: The SGS crew refers to me as Squirrel or Flying Squirrel). (Editor’s Note: This is true!) There are queens that are born with acting chops and queens that are not. Dolls that get a “Get Out of Jail for Free” card include Latrice Royale and Dida Ritz. Bravo girls, you did a great job with giving life to the character that was assigned to you and for taking great direction from Max Mutchnik, the director and creator of the hit series, “Will and Grace”. Everyone else either had a language barrier or was owning their own one-woman show. However, I was not pleased with Kenya, Sharon and Madame for their lack of interest and an unwillingness to take direction in order to bring their characters to the next level.
After that brutal display of “acting”, the dolls dressed up for the runway presentation for the Red Carpet Hollywood effect. But before the runway show started two queens got hot and heavy: Phi Phi O’Hara and Sharon Needles…
At least I AM a show girl! Go back to Party City where you belong!
Phi Phi O’Hara
Girls, girls! Behave yourselves, and remember that you are representing hundreds of drag queens out there with various different styles of drag. (Editor’s Note #2: Phi Phi got in a funny line, but she needs to STFU…especially since she’s a dull drone with half the interest and talent of Sharon.) Now on to the show, show, show…Phi Phi brings out her white pageant “red-carpet” dress. Latrice is beautiful in blue and Beverly Hills. Madame La Queer brings out another green dress that is surely, still, rolling in the deep agonizing sleep of Michele Visage. Milan plays the gold card with a sparkling gold dress but I hardly think she’s a real life Oscar trophy. Sharon Needles dressed like a classy old school Hollywood lady. Team Willam won the challenge and the winner of the challenge goes to Latrice Royale. Werq it girl! The two queens on the bottom were Milan and Madame La Queer and they had to do a highly intense lip-sync for their life. Madame La Queer failed to give us a routine with much energy, jazz or pizzazz and she ended up going home and RuPaul saved Milan for one more week.
Obviously the competition is beginning to heat up – on the runway and backstage in the Interior Illusions Lounge and The Gold Bar. Latrice share with her team her heartfelt coming out story that includes some old skeletons from her closet about the relationship with her brothers. Meanwhile, Sharon and Phi Phi continue their argument over Party City queens and showgirl queens. It’s a fight that’s not over yet! What drama is going to unfold next week…Next week the dolls prepare for “Snatch Game”, so check back next week for another review or hop on down to Lobby Bar for episode five.
