RICHIE HAWTIN is regarded as the leading protagonist of future thinking in electronic music. He is a techno icon who continues to continually push the frontiers of music and technology. As well as being the leader of the global underground music movement, Richie is idolized by the likes of today’s EDM superstars like Skrillex and DeadMau5, who both grew up listening to his music. In 2012 Richie launched the CNTRL concept – adding education to the forefront of his vision and agenda for the future of electronic music and technology innovations. In 2015, CNTRL: BEYOND EDM will return and Richie Hawtin’s work in music and technology education will continue to shine a light on the power and possibilities of electronic music this year and beyond.
CNTRL launched in October 2012 as a groundbreaking North American college tour combining educational daytime lectures on music technology, followed by an evening of electronic music with RICHIE HAWTIN, LOCO DICE, EAN GOLDEN from DJ TechTools and a host of special guests from the scene.
The lectures focus on the technology aspects of modern-day electronic music, presenting the more futuristic and underground side of the genre, as championed by HAWTIN and DICE and their peers for the last two decades. They aim to inform and inspire people about technology, music production, live performance, and the business of electronic music.
All DJs performing on the night participated in the master classes by day, and CNTRL invited local DJ / production / industry pioneers from each region to also take part in the events. CNTRL is a future thinking session but will also ensure the students leave with a deeper understanding of how the genre developed to where it is today. The event then ends with a low-ticket gig at a venue near campus, giving the students a chance to experience the artists in action.
