The Frye Art Museum and the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) have partnered to develop a series of four lectures on the visual culture of the African continent and its diaspora. This series will explore the history and practice of artists of African descent, drawing connections between the African continent and its diaspora as the locus of Africanity. This is the fourth lecture of the series.

A lecture by Frye Art Museum Educator Negarra A. Kudumu addressing the aesthetic tendencies and conceptual foundations observed in the work of Sembene, Rolando, Palcy, and Dash and contextualizing their work within the socio-cultural circumstances of their time.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Negarra A. Kudumu is the Educator at the Frye Art Museum where she develops and manages adult education and public programs. She is a trained social scientist and independent scholar of contemporary art, with a profound interest in cultural production and consumption and the ways in which it is expressed through language. She maintains an expertise in the contemporary art of the African diaspora with a growing base of knowledge in the contemporary art of South Asia and Iran and its diaspora. Her intellectual interests reside at the intersections of contemporary art, curation, and critical theory. Additionally, Kudumu is the Culture and Politics Editor for The Postcolonialist and a contributor to Art Radar Journal.
