Celebrate the innovative life of David Bowie with a performance of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars on what would have been his 70th birthday – January 8, 2017. This groundbreaking concept album will be performed in its entirety by vocalist Star Anna and the Synergia Northwest Orchestra.

Bowie existed outside of our standard norms. Like Prince and Patti Smith, his connection of both masculine and feminine forms oozed pure sexuality. Artistically abstract and visually enthralling, our story begins with Ziggy and his Spiders arriving through a black hole as free love, experimental alien rock stars who explore the apocalyptical earth. The Earth’s future is bleak and projected to last five years due to the lack of natural resources. Ziggy attempts to instill hope in the youth inhabitants. Following a dream, he begins to presents himself as spiritual savior.

Star immediately connected with David Bowie through watching the musical fantasy film Labyrinth. Out of the speakers came an otherworldly, mystical sound associated with an androgynous creature. David’s lean body in black tights and a billowy shirt along with bigger than life spiky blond hair inspired 6-year old Star to cut her own hair. Her mother tried to fix it, but she ended up with a bald spot and a rat tail.

Concepts for this production began months before his death while Star Anna was driving over the Snoqualmie Pass. Then, in the dark hours of January 11, 2016 Star, stirring and unable to sleep, picked up her phone to learn of David Bowie’s passing. Star turned to the demise of Bowie’s Starman persona to come to terms with the death of an inspiration and individual mortality. The idea was cemented in the final Stardust album song Rock and Roll Suicide. With heavy string instruments complimented by a heavy horn section, we experience Ziggy’s demise. Ziggy reaches spiritual heights and culminates with his annihilation. A death coupled by his own consumptions and his inspired followers, who tear him to pieces. This event celebrates the multi-faceted / otherworldly talent of David Bowie through classical orchestration, from beginning to end, paired with the stunningly gritty and expressive voice of Star Anna.
