Scream Queens Vs. Final Girls
September 29, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Amie Simon explores the origins of Scream Queens and Final Girls. Where do their roles functionally overlap and are they even necessary to progress women’s roles in the horror genre?
From the first Scream Queen (Fay Wray in King Kong) to more recent Final Girls (Matilda Lutz as Jen in Revenge). This class will address two iconic labels and tropes applied to women in horror: the Scream Queen and the Final Girl. We will explore their origins as well as their similarities and differences, discussing how they can overlap, and how they’ve changed over time, as well whether or not they’re needed, or if there are better ways to describe women in horror.
Many films will be discussed during this class, but familiarity with the following films is recommended:
King Kong (1933)
Psycho (1960)
Halloween (1978)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Scream (1996)
You’re Next (2011)
Revenge (2018)

About the Instructor:
Amie Simon is the Director of Marketing at Smarthouse Creative, where she helps independent entrepreneurs find their brand voice, hone their social media skills, and build their community. She’s loved film ever since she saw an Imperial Star Destroyer loom across the UA 150 screen in 1977 and has applied that love to Seattle’s ThreeImaginaryGirls.com since 2009, leading TIG’s film coverage and obsessing over which movie soundtracks are the best. She also writes about her extreme love for the horror genre at ilovesplatter.com.
About What The Femme!:
What The Femme! is a SIFF Education series exploring female-representing character archetypes in cinema through analyzing the roles of women in horror, science fiction, and fantasy films. Each session will explore one character or archetype through two to three primary films, though more will be referenced. This education extension of SIFF’s WTF Festival programming is curated by Colleen O’Holleran.
