Something for all you hardcore Madonna fans out there….the former Material Girl turned Madame X has been wowing NYC audiences for the past few weeks with the start of her new “intimate” tour supporting her Madame X album. The Lady M is playing smaller venues to give her fans a more “one on one” experience as opposed to the usual tour taking in huge impersonal arenas.
Despite the fact Madonna has a rep for texting when SHE attends other people’s shows, she’s banned cell phones/cameras from this tour to emphasize the intimacy of the Madame X experience…
Madonna will wrap up her multi-week gig at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House on October 12th before heading to Chicago for 7 shows then onto to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre for 3 shows starting on Halloween, October 31st. She then has runs in Vegas and L.A. for the month of November before heading back East to wrap up the North American leg of the tour. She heads to Europe for 2020.
Naturally, Pacific Northwest fans are a bit butt hurt she hasn’t scheduled any shows up our way but….Madonna is known for long tours and she’s only booked up through March 2020. It seems possible the tour will extend, despite the fact she’s claiming she’s losing money on the show which has a huge cast of performers and musicians.
Personally, my guess is the tour will extend. It seems very unlikely she wouldn’t schedule an Asian and Australian leg, as well as a Latin American one, too. At the very least expect an announcement that the European tour will probably add on a few more major stops (Rome and Berlin seem obvious) and at some point come back to North America for a second run…it seems unlikely she would forego any Canadian shows and don’t rule out more U.S. dates including a possibility for a trip our way, even if it means she visits Vancouver B.C. but not Seattle itself.
We’ll see….
Meanwhile, Madame X: The Show has earned mostly positive reviews from the press and the usual raves from the fans. Read the breathless prose from the press release, down below.
Madonna has debuted her highly anticipated Madame X Tour in Brooklyn, NY to ecstatic sold-out crowds. Her rare and unprecedented series of performances will take place exclusively in theaters, giving fans an intimate and rapturous experience of the artist as never before. Inspired by her life immersed in the rich cultural influences of Lisbon, the linguistically diverse album Madame X is a love letter to multiculturalism and a testament to Madonna’s transformative influence on, and respect for, global culture. As compelling and audacious as Madonna’s intrepid persona Madame X, this virtuoso performance celebrates her fourteenth studio album while incorporating previous hits and fan favorites in an unrivaled theatrical journey.
The Madame X Tour opened September 17 at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in New York, to be followed by multiple performances in 2019 at select venues including The Chicago Theatre, newly announced performances at The Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco, The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, The Wiltern in Los Angeles, the Boch Center Wang Theatre in Boston, The Met Philadelphia and The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater. The Madame X Tour continues in 2020 with multiple dates at the Lisbon Coliseum, The London Palladium and Le Grand Rex in Paris.
The best-selling female solo touring artist in history with the highest-grossing concert tour ever by a female artist, Madonna brings her critically acclaimed #1 album Madame X to life in this heady theatrical masterpiece. Madonna most recently earned her record-extending 48th No. 1 song on Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs chart last month with the Tracy Young remix of “I Rise” from Madame X.
Madonna will bring the enthralling and sublime artistry of the all-female Orquestra Batukadeiras to the stage of the Madame X Tour every night. While creating Madame X in Lisbon, Madonna found a kindred artistic spirit in Dino d’Santiago, a Portuguese singer of Cape Verdean descent. He introduced her to other musicians, including the Orquestra Batukadeiras who are featured on the song “Batuka” from Madame X. Their performance of “Batuka” evokes Batuque, a style of music created by the women originating from Cape Verde. Condemned by the church for what was considered an act of rebellion, the female slaves were forbidden to drum. These inspiring and powerful women continued their singing and dancing. The Batuque lives on today.
The Madame X Tour is created and directed by a team led by Madonna, including Jamie King as Creative Producer and Megan Lawson as Co-Director and Lead Choreographer. Additional creative contribution and choreography by Damien Jalet, Costume Design by Eyob Yohannes and Set Design by Ric Lipson for Stufish Entertainment Architects.
