Art Globally: Indigo Allure

Why is indigo included as a seventh color in the rainbow? How is indigo different from other natural dyes? What happened with indigo after the British chose it for navy uniforms? Explore the mysteries and allure of indigo, along with conversation, drinks, and refreshments. Ticket also includes admission to the galleries.

Textile collector David Paly will give a talk in the exhibition galleries for “Mood Indigo: Textiles from Around the World,” where you can track indigo’s travels from Javanese sarongs, to European tapestries, Nigerian paste-resist patterning, and Japanese kimono. Paly will bring additional textiles that can be handled.
Stop by the auditorium for part or all of the extraordinary documentary “Blue Alchemy” (Dir. Mary Lance, 2011), featuring dyers around the world, their processes in creating, and projects to benefit communities and improve the environment.
