Led by Seattle-based artist Susan Robb, Urban Arbortecture is a walking tour through the streets of downtown Seattle. Using ideas of trees and the built environment as a jumping off point to discuss the city’s history, participants will stops at various landmarks to consider Seattle’s past, present, and future in the areas of economic progress, urban planning, social justice, and public art. Guests will visit Pilgrim Pillars Park, Freeway, the Tree Grate Museum, the Giant Sequoia on Stewart Street, and Anne and Patrick Poirier’s New Archetypes.

Participants will receive a handout containing historical photographs and illustrations to inspire active participation in re-imagining our city. Scratching the surface of the city, we’ll find a deeper understanding of the past, with the hope of creating deeper meaning in the present-day.

ABOUT SUSAN ROBB
Susan Robb’s work is an ongoing, process-driven investigation of people, place, and our search for utopia. Robb received a Creative Capital grant to produce Wild Times a work that combined new media, social engagement, and a 2,680-mile hike Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail. In 2012 Robb received an Americans for the Arts/Public Art Network Award for The Long Walk. Other awards include a Pollack Krasner Fellowship, a CityArtist Project Grant, a Stranger Genius Award, and support by the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Robb was the Artist Residence for the Seattle Office of Arts and created the Public Arts Master Plan for downtown Seattle, guiding and influencing the development of a public art plan that creates a robust, cohesive, and long-range vision for SDOT’s 1% for Art programming and art enhancements in Seattle’s downtown core.

Additional Details

Meet Susan at 6th and Blanchard, across the street from the Amazon Spheres.
Participants will walk up to three miles and stand outdoors for two hours.
Dress appropriately for inclement weather, wear comfortable shoes, bring water and a snack.
This program will be difficult for young children and pets.
This event runs rain, shine, or snow!
