Bryan Doerries with David Strathairn and Lili Taylor: The Healing Power of Theater
October 6, 2015 @ 7:30 pm
Theater has the ability to transform lives and heal wounds. From soldiers returning with PTSD and prisoners in solitary confinement, to hospice workers and family members losing loved ones, Bryan Doerries uses ancient Greek tragedies to help others. The Theater of War recounts his experiences presenting “Ajax,” “Prometheus Bound,” “Women of Trachis,” and other ageless works for The Theater of War project (which he founded). He’ll share the lessons he’s learned from adapting and staging these tragedies; and how to “remove out-of-date barriers and clean the outer crust of language” (director Peter Brook) to make them accessible for modern audiences. Academy Award-nominated actor David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Lincoln”) and actress Lili Taylor (“Starting Out in the Evening,” “Public Enemies”) will also perform excerpts from Doerries’ most commonly used pieces, showing why the lessons of this culture remain relevant today.
