Cured/Not Cured
August 3, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Come hear the story of Gary Steinkohl–a.k.a. “Patient B”– one of two HIV+ men who received stem cell transplants as cancer treatment and who then were asked to stop their HIV treatments as participants in an HIV cure experiment in the hopes to find out if they had been cured.
Gary was off meds for 7 months, the last three of which he began to believe himself to be cured.
The lead researcher of the experiment also relayed this hope at a large international HIV conference, and very quickly an overly simple understanding of the science was reported as “two more HIV cures.”
Joining Gary will be that lead researcher, Dr. Timothy Henrich.
Together they will share their perspectives as participant and scientist on this dramatic tale of being cured, then not cured.
Their combined experience of this watershed moment is a signpost of what lies ahead for many more people as we approach clinical attempts to eliminate HIV from the body.
It is a cautionary tale full of inspiration that people everywhere who live with HIV and the people who love them will want to hear.
If you dream of being cured of HIV–or if you dream of someone you love being cured–you will want to come to Fred Hutch on the evening of August 3rd and hear Gary’s story.
