Democracy Justice Committee Meeting!
April 6, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Are you looking for ways to plug into and support the LGBTQ community? Does the idea of transforming democracy to make it possible for everyone to participate excite you? LGBTQ Allyship has an exciting opportunity for you.
But first, a little context: In 2015 Seattle passed Initiative 122, known as the Honest Elections initiative. In essence, the initiative would change how political candidates raise money for their campaigns. Rather than spending the majority of their time campaigning wealthy donors, candidates are incentivized to meet with Seattle residents who sign up to receive democracy vouchers. The vouchers are valued at $25, and each user gets 4, totaling a $100 of public funds for residents to use to support candidates of their choosing. We all know democracy is not perfect and that there are a lot of barriers to voting especially for immigrant and formerly incarcerated populations. The beauty of democracy vouchers is that it’s another way for people to participate and have their voices heard.
This is where you come in. LGBTQ Allyship is looking for 3-5 badass people who are passionate about democracy reform that centers on the empowerment of marginalized communities. You will help drive the work to get the word out about democracy vouchers by providing information about the process to our communities and assist with getting folks registered to vote and/or signed up to use democracy vouchers in 2017.
The democracy voucher committee will meet once a month – first Thursday of every month.
