About …
WHITNEY BALLEN
”Maybe it was the sleep deprivation, maybe it was the sadness of ending a week with a long distance lover, but hearing Whitney Ballen’s haunting, precious voice sing “I give up/I can’t compete with her anymore…” brought me to big, fat crocodile tears, despite lack of lyrical relevance to my life. Her sound, one of reserved emotional indulgence, elevates specific lyrics and stories to a platform of listener relatability—regardless of their own current emotional state or own experiences. On her upcoming album, Being Here Is Hard, Ballen uses her recognizable and unique vocals to re-contextualize the sound of loss and love.
THANK YOU
Thank You’s second album, Sardine Dream, released in October, is full of surprises. It starts with a guitar played in reverse and ends with the sound of waves crashing on a beach. In between, the band toys with new wave synths, jazzy guitar runs and baroque pop hooks. A vocal part echoes like a rock skittering across ice, submerged sound effects chirp like submarine sonar and falsetto la-la-las fill many of the spaces in between. The more you listen, the more you notice

RED RIBBON
“Red Ribbon… feels like finding a cassette in a boom box, perhaps in a room by yourself off from the main party, and pressing play. They capture a feeling of discovery with songs that are beautiful and rough around the edges.” -Nicole Capozziello
