TAKING THE L.E.A.D.: A Community Conversation about Public Health & Reducing Stigma
September 24, 2015 @ 6:30 pm
The Capitol Hill Community Council recognizes the public health crisis that exists in our city – such as a 53% increase in heroin overdose, and close to 50th place in mental health funding. More and more lately, we hear about another round of reduced funding for the critical programs and services that could dramatically improve our efforts to preserve the spirit and culture of our neighborhood.
Our September 2015 Monthly General meeting invites experts from the SPD Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (L.E.A.D.) [confirmed] program to share more about their work and more about how the program has provided community value for both public health and public safety. And the person behind Ricky’s Law, legislation that unified the involuntary commitment system, so that a person can be committed if he or she is at risk of serious harm due to mental illness and/or substance abuse.
Then, we will hold a panel – welcoming guests from Stay Safe Seattle (harm reduction, practical responses and education), People’s Harm Reduction Alliance (needle exchange) [confirmed], Project N.E.O.N (HIV/STIs and link with meth and education), and King County Public Health (needle exchange/harm reduction services) [confirmed] to discuss the landscape of mental health/substance abuse/chemical dependency funding and services, how to get involved to address the issue from a neighborhood/individual level, reduce stigma, and learning ways to advocate for increased funding and less criminalization.
MORE DETAILS TO COME
