TAYLOR MAC: A 24-DECADE HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC (ABRIDGED)
Presented in association with Seattle Theatre Group
Apr 20 at The Moore Theatre
Music/Theater | New York City
Taylor Mac returns to Seattle with this gloriously irreverent, subjective history of America. Originally performed as a one-time 24-hour event, it was recognized on The New York Times’ 2016 lists of Best Performances, Best Theater, and Best Music. This abridged version is an immersive and outrageously entertaining crash course in the 240 years (and counting) of the history of American culture and dysfunction. Told from the perspective of those whose stories are often forgotten, dismissed, or buried, the show highlights various musical styles and artistic voices ranging from murder ballads to disco, Walt Whitman to David Bowie, and beyond. Mac is joined onstage by music director/arranger Matt Ray, an incomparable band, and local performers.
TAYLOR MAC is a playwright, actor, singer-songwriter, and performance artist. Mac’s work has been performed around the world, including at Lincoln Center, London’s Hackney Empire (with the LIFT Festival), the Sydney Opera House, Minneapolis’s Guthrie Theater, Chicago’s MCA and Steppenwolf Theater, and Stockholm’s Sodra Theatern. Mac is the author of 17 full-length plays and performance pieces and the recipient of a Guggenheim Award, The Doris Duke Award, The Herb Alpert Award in Theater, the Peter Zeisler Memorial Award, the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award, an Obie Award (for The Lily’s Revenge), and an Ethyl Eichelberger Award. Mac and collaborator/music director/arranger Matt Ray were awarded an Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History for A 24-Decade History of Popular Music.
