There is a superhero within us all, regardless of our nation of birth, beliefs, orientation, gender identity, race, abilities, or family makeup. This collection of uniquely American portraits and stories celebrates our differences while highlighting our commonalities.

Inspired by New York City-based cartoonist, speaker, and performance artist Vishavjit Singh, aka Sikh Captain America, photographer Nate Gowdy and a merry band of creatives present 40 everyday superheroes whose stories of resilience and tenderness exemplify life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The show features Congresswomen Pramila Jayapal, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Veronica Escobar, Sylvia Garcia, and Deb Haaland; Washington State Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu; and former Houston mayor Annise Parker. Retail Therapy owner Wazhma Samizay’s father, son, and aunt were also photographed for the project. Also!, WAzhma’s favorite human being, Riz Rollins of KEXP, is among ten portraits exhibited for the first time.
