Because it tapped into a universal story in the collective psyche: The Hero’s Journey– a timeless story construct still relevant to scriptwriters, filmmakers, and film lovers today. Join media educator Malory Graham for this exploration of the structure of Star Wars and how it still informs screenwriting and filmmaking today.

In this workshop we will discuss the relationship between the 1977 Star Wars script (Episode 4: A New Hope) and Joseph Campbell’s iconic book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, on the power of myth and the hero’s journey in storytelling. The class will map out the twelve stages of the hero’s journey to the corresponding scenes in Star Wars and storyboard the twelve shots that represent that trajectory. From refusing the hero’s adventure to finding a mentor to spending time in the belly of the whale we will look at the themes that make any story and subsequent film compelling and universal.

About the Instructor:
As a media educator, Malory Graham founded Reel Grrls, the film school just for girls in 2001 and has developed an array of classes in cinematography, directing, and film fundraising. She continues to create opportunities for audiences of all ages to create and appreciate the art of film.
