What’s Gentrification Got To Do With It?
August 30, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The NW Network invites community to come together for a panel and group discussion around hate violence, policing, and gentrification. As hate motivated violence continues to rise across the country, the battle for Capitol Hill’s gay soul continues. Meeting an ongoing increase in hate violence with an increase in police presence supports the gentrification that erodes the existence of diverse LGBTQ communities on the hill – communities most vulnerable to and impacted by hate violence. Rainbow crosswalks and Safe Space stickers may signal a safe gay space, but safe for who?
Come with open minds, ears, as well as ideas on how we can all work towards a Capitol Hill that remains a safe and ACCESSIBLE neighborhood for all community members, especially those of us most impacted by and vulnerable to hate and bias-motivated violence.
Featured Panelists:
Kshama Sawant – City Council of Seattle – District 3
Viviane Mulcahy – Q-Patrol Seattle
Natalie Curtis – Capitol Hill Community Council
Roxana Pardo Garcia – Community Police Commission
Because the venue has small capacity, REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY. If you have not registered via Eventbrite you will not be able to access the event: https://bit.ly/2naHiI5
ACCESSIBILITY INFO:
The event will take place in the Pike/Pine Room of 12 Avenue Arts, room 206. It’s on the second flor up a couple of flights of stairs. There are elevators to allow access to the second floor. Restrooms are accessibly via a code and are currently not gender neutral, but we’re working on designating a gender neutral restroom. The space asks of all guests to come as scent free as possible.
