The Tony Awards were on last night and, as usual, they put on the best awards show on television, totally kicking the Oscars in the ass. The revival of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart picked up three awards, including best Play Revival and a Featured Actor nod for out actor John Benjamin Hickey. And, as expected, the South Park boys, Trey Parker and Matt Stone picked up the lion’s share of Tonys, with nine awards for their hit musical, The Book of Mormon including Best Musical, Book, Direction and a slew of other awards. The British import, War Horse took Best Play (and, the Steven Spielberg movie version is scheduled to open at Christmas) and Anything Goes took Best Musical Revival.
But, the big winner of the night was Neil Patrick Harris’s return as the Tony host. He’s already won an Emmy for his previous stint; last night’s brilliant and charming performance will probably earn him another. His opening number, “Broadway’s Not Just for Gays” brought the house down, and his later duet with another successful Tony host, Hugh Jackman raises the question, “Why don’t the Oscar people ask these two to host their show?” Also, they should hire the entire production team for the Tony Awards…they consistently put on a brilliantly entertaining show while the Oscar’s just get duller and more irrelevant every year.
Here’s NPH’s big opening number. He does us proud.
