Indoor Options For A Showery Day Include “Jesus”, Sandra Bernhard and Miyazaki…

June 23, 2012• bySeattle Gay Scene

FUCK THIS WEATHER!

(The joys of being non-traditional media include the power to lead off a post with an expletive…can Joni Balter pull that off at the Times? I think not…)

Go ahead and brave the outdoor ick is our motto but if you really hate drenched hair and drippy make-up, you have some lovely indoor options today as well and not necessarily including booze, drag queens and porn stars… There’s the 2nd weekend of the Seattle Erotic Art Festival over in Fremont, now gloriously free of all those dirty hippies and slack jawed yokels over there last weekend for the Fremont Solstice Parade and Festival. If you love naughty art of all kinds, you have today (Saturday) and Sunday to check it out, including LOTS of queer art on display.

Sandra Bernhard has 2 more performances of her amazing stage show, “I Love Being Me, Don’t You?” at The Triple Door tonight at 7:30pm and 10pm. Our Mr. Williams went opening night and swooned, especially enjoying Ms Bernhard’s cover of a Lady Gaga song. Highly recommended.

The Seattle Men’s Chorus is gonna “Sing Out” in their annual Pride concert at McCaw Hall tonight at 8pm. Who doesn’t love an army of gay men singing chorale arrangements of your favorite pop songs?

Fans of animation and Japanese animation in particular, need to head to SIFF Cinema at The Uptown at some point in the next two weeks for their awesome “Castles In The Sky: Miyazaki, Takahata and The Masters of Studio Ghibli” Festival featuring the beautiful anime films from that esteemed animation company.

Studio Ghibli, founded in Tokyo in 1985 by animation directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, is one of the most successful and well-respected animation studios in the world. Cultivating a creative force of talented directors, animators and storytellers under the revered brilliance of Miyazaki and Takahata, Studio Ghibli’s films have been praised for their originality, dazzling animation and epic storytelling.

SIFF Cinema Uptown is thrilled to present a comprehensive retrospective of Studio Ghibli’s films, featuring new 35mm prints, rarely seen treasures that have never been released in North America, and most films presented in both their original Japanese language with English subtitles and the celebrated English language versions as supervised by Studio Ghibli. Don’t miss your chance to see some of the greatest animated films of all time back on the giant screen!

If you’re looking for a good play to go see, I HIGHLY recommend the current production of Azeotrope theater company’s “Jesus Hopped The A Train” now on stage at the tiny Eulalie Scandiuzzi Space at ACT. It’s a powerful play about two men in prison and the relationship they forge and it’s beautifully directed, designed and performed with the two leads, Richard Nguyen Slonkiker and Dumi giving exceptionally strong and nuanced performances as the two prisoners. Not to be missed by serious theater lovers!

For more options, check our 2012 Pride page sponsored by The Grill on Broadway and our Main Calendar.

Stay dry…except in the areas that NEED to be moist and juicy!
