Broadway Cares About Equality…”Memphis” and “Wicked” Take Stage For Ref 74

September 25, 2012• bySeattle Gay Scene

Wicked defies opponents of Marriage Equality with big fundraiser.

It’s not a shock that theater types care about the fight for Marriage Equality…I mean, the gays practically INVENTED theater and there’s not a theater production anywhere in the world without at least a couple practitioners of the “Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name”.

Only of course now it’s pretty damn ok to speak that name, (well, in civilized countries) and the fight for Marriage Equality on the global, national and most specifically, local scale is being carried out front and center on stages all over the place. Especially in Seattle…

TWO Broadway touring companies of hit musicals are stepping up to raise money for the approval of Referendum 74, the Washington State ballot initiative to legalized marriage equality, in the coming weeks with the first scheduled for next Monday, October 1st at Neumos. “It’s About Time: The Equality Concert” will feature members of the cast of the musical, “Memphis” currently onstage at The 5th Avenue Theatre now through October 7th, who have kindly given up their only day off to raise funds for Washington United for Marriage.

Join the National Touring Company of the Tony Award Winning Broadway Musical MEMPHIS and DJ Greg Vandy (KEXP and American Standard Time) for a night of music hosted by MEMPHIS’ Bryan Fenkart!

$15 general admission tickets are available now at www.neumos.com/buy. Doors open at 7pm.

A couple of weeks later, the touring company of the beloved musical “Wicked” will also do its part with an entire performance of the show focusing on raising money. Premium seating has been made available to Washington United for Marriage for the Thursday, October 18th performance at The Paramount. Premium ticket holders (which range in price from $500 to $1000) will also get to attend a private party following the performance. “Smash” seating prices range from $100 to $250. Both can be purchased here. AND, if that’s too steep for your pocketbook, you can enter a weekly sweepstakes to WIN tickets to the event…go HERE to enter.

But, don’t pout if that date doesn’t work for you…”Wicked” is settling into The Paramount for a LOOOOOONG run, from October 10th to November 17th. That’s a lot of gravity defying….
