Are you recovered from Friday night yet?
We have our doubts…
If you are, and you’re ready to bop about in the daytime, there are so many damned options for Pride Saturday daytime shenanigans…and, some of them are even family friendly!
(Don’t worry, drunks…there’s plenty of boozy options as well!)
First up:
It’s a bit of a trainwreck, but the Capitol Hill Pride Festival, aka “Broadway Pride” is back on Pride Saturday, June 29, 2013 from 11am to 11pm and running from the corner of Broadway & John up to the corner of Broadway & Roy where the Main Stage will be located with hostess, Mark “Mom” Finley. Don’t get us wrong…we LIKE the idea of a Saturday, Capitol Hill-centric, family friendly event, but this one has never been very well organized…the large number of empty spaces along the street every year being a prime indication, plus the rather lackluster line-up of talent on the official stages. Judging by the hot mess nature of their official website, that still seems to be the case. Still, it’s a pleasant enough stroll for folks who would like some Prideful fun but without the high cost and booze soaked nature of so many other Pride events.
You can expect the usual array of booths manned by non-profits, chiropractors and candle/bead/t-shirt vendors as well as performance stages at the aforementioned Broadway & Roy, and outside Julia’s on Broadway and La Cocina. The popular “Doggy Drag Contest” is back as well at 12:30pm at the Main Stage. And, we’re pretty sure that beloved Capitol Hill/Seattle eccentric Boe Odyssey (aka “Flowing Scarves Hippie Dude”) will be somewhere about, twirling in blissful joy.
Last year, The Grill on Broadway (R.I.P.) was the center of all the fun and they were scheduled to be the main stage for this year’s event…another reason to mourn the loss of The Grill. Hopefully, Julia’s will bring their A game to the festivities this year, and judging by their line-up, it looks like they have. They have Mama Tits as their daytime hostess, plus all sorts of aerialists and queens on hand to keep the masses entertained and DJ Bret Law on the deck. The Julia’s stage will also host the finals of “The D Factor” drag competition in the evening and there’s a special edition of LeFaux with RPDR Season Five winner Jinkx Monsoon, and RPDR Season 1 cutie pie, Ongina plus the regular cast of the show. (Fans of LeFaux can also go to the regular show at 10pm, which requires a paid ticket. Go here to grab one…)(Also: don’t expect Jinkx & Ongina to be outside performing all day/evening…we’re guessing it’s a relatively short set. )
It should also be noted that the RAINBOW WOMEN’S HEALTH FAIR is also in the middle of the Capitol Hill Pride Festival, at All Pilgrim’s Church at Broadway & Republican. A great place for women to get some very useful information.
Meanwhile, over at Cal Anderson Park, there’s a couple different events going on. First up, the Seattle PrideFest folks have created an awesome and FREE family event, PRIDEFEST FAMILY DAY from Noon to 5pm..here’s the skinny:
PrideFest Family Day will take place from noon-5pm in Cal Anderson Park (the meadow between the fountain and the playfield) on Saturday, June 29, 2013. All day we’ll have games run by Camp Tent Trees and will have crafts and drag queen storytime throughout the door, plus a bounce house to amuse the young ones. Food and drink will be available at the event.
We’ll also have some great entertainment:
ALL DAY – Camp & Field Games run by Camp Ten Trees
1:00pm – Jeff Evans’ Magic (show #1)
2:30pm – Recess Monkey (performance)
3:30pm – Jeff Evans’ Magic (show #2)
ALL DAY: Arts & Crafts, Drag Queen Storytime, Bounce House
From 2pm to 4pm in Cal Andeson, you can enjoy Quake Rugby and their 4th Annual “Prom Dress Rugby Match” versus the women’s rugby team, The Breaker. It’s jolly good fun as the men of Quake don drag to battle the women with host Aleksa Manila presiding. AND, it’s a benefit for POCAAN: People of Color Against AIDS Network. http://www.pocaan.org/
Then, from 5pm to 8pm it’s the very popular SEATTLE DYKE MARCH/RALLY as the powerful women of Seattle take to the streets for three hours of solidarity. It starts and ends at Seattle Center Community College’s Plaza at Broadway & Pine and it’s FREE! Our favorite Van Dyke, Ms Lamar, will be an emcee.
Now…we’ve covered the Family Friendly/Community events, let’s get to the drunken nitty gritty…Both Purr and The Wildrose will have their VERY popular outdoor beer gardens starting around 1pm…if you enjoy sitting in the hot sun, on hot pavement, behind chain link fence, then go at it! There’s djs all afternoon before things start getting down and dirty at nightfall.
There’s also TWO gay drunken boat cruises going…we know Nark Magazine’s MEN AT SEA event is now sold out but it looks like the competing PRIDE CRUISE might have a few tickets left.
