Our beloved Jinkx Monsoon has ridden the tidal wave of success all the way to an off Broadway gig at New York City’s Laurie Beechman Theatre for a several weeks long gig of her musical comedy show, “The Vaudvillians which features Jinkx (aka actor Jerick Hoffer) as a completely different character, Kitty Witless and her sidekick Major Scales, (aka actor/musician Richard Andriessen) playing Dr. Dan Von Dandy as a pair of 1920s era Vaudeville artists who were accidentally frozen in ice for the last 90 years only to be defrosted and to discover that many of “their” songs have been stolen by contemporary artists. It’s a funny and witty show that Seattlites in the know have adored for years; the duo have played in at numerous venues around town long before Ms Monsoon found national fame and attention as the winner of season 5 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”.
Others are now paying attention as well. Rave reviews have been trickling in since the pair opened their show in NYC over a week ago but now a major media giant has weighed in…Tim Murphy just gave the duo and their show a very positive review in The New York Time’s online magazine. He compares the duo to a similar act from a decade ago, Kiki and Herb but notes that The Vaudvillians are a sweeter and less politicized version of that beloved cabaret act. Read the entire review over HERE.
And, The Vaudvillians are also attracting some celebrity attention. Iconic comedian Joan Rivers hung around after her own show at The Laurie Beechman to check out Ms Monsoon and the Major’s show and apparently enjoyed the “very talented Jinkx Monsoon.
We love Joan but she’s also involved in a nasty strike involving the writers on her E! show “Fashion Police” who are demanding better wages, benefits and working conditions. If Joan offers Jinkx and the Major a writing gig, they need to run out the stage door…
The Vaudvillians continues through August 22, though there are not daily performances and all the July tickets are sold out. Some tickets do remain for the August shows…if you’re in the NYC area, go HERE to grab’em while you can.
