Sasha Velour’s “Smoke & Mirrors” Comes to The Moore in November

September 5, 2019• byMichael Strangeways
Sasha Velour brings her first solo queen show to Seattle in November

Sasha Velour, the fender fluid/fashion forward winner of Season 9 of RuPaul’s Drag Race will be bringing her first solo queen show to Seattle on Friday, November 29th. Like many of the big drag tours, she’ll be performing at Seattle’s historic Moore Theatre.

Her appearance will be right in the middle of a slew of shows by LGBTQ artists. Drag diva Coco Peru will perform at the Egyptian Theatre on Capitol Hill on November 13th followed by a return appearance from “bounce” star Big Freedia (who appeared in Seattle during Pride) at The Neptune on November 15th. And, RPDR superstar Bianca Del Rio will warm up the Moore for Sasha with her “It’s Jester Joke” show on Wednesday, November 20th.

And, of course December will be PACKED with holiday shows with a gay flavor including the annual Xmas visit by beloved filmmaker John Waters on December 5th (at The Neptune) plus the return of other popular holiday shows from Dina Martina, Scott Shoemaker, Jinkx Monsoon & BenDeLaCreme, Kitten’n’Lou and more during the month. PLUS, this year will also feature a visit by Taylor Mac with a holiday show at The Moore on December 19th and 20th.

Better start saving those coins to see all those shows!

STG Presents Sasha Velour’s Smoke & Mirrors at The Moore Theatre on Friday, November 29, 2019.

Smoke & Mirrors, Sasha Velour’s first one-queen show, is an effortless blend of drag, visual art, and magic. Velour introduces audiences to a whole new side of her artistry, through 12 dazzling and genre-busting lip-synch performances, all directed and choreographed by the queen herself. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as she explodes into rose petals, vanishes in a poof of smoke, saws herself in half, conjures a rainstorm, even transforms into a tree in front of your eyes (to name just a few). But the real magic is the way that these illusions and deceptions serve to unmask deeper truths, sparking fresh analysis of gender, fame, family, and the importance of dreaming big and living life over-the-top.

Featuring the music of Annie Lennox, Whitney Houston, Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Celine Dion, Sia, Nina Simone, Le Tigre and more. Video created by Sasha Velour. Costumes designed by long-time collaborator Diego Montoya.

The show toured Australia and New Zealand with In The Dark Events in January 2019 to rave reviews. It debuted in the U.S. for the first time in March 2019 at New York Live Arts, played The Ace Theatre in downtown Los Angeles in May, and made its UK debut with two sold-out engagements at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London this August.

As the Editorial Director/Co-Owner, Michael Strangeways writes, edits and does about a million other jobs for Seattle Gay Scene, Puget Sound's most visited LGBTQ news, arts and entertainment website now celebrating its 14th year as a media outlet. A semi-proud Midwesterner by birth, he's lived in Seattle since 2000. He's also a film producer who would like you to check out the Jinkx Monsoon documentary, "Drag Becomes Him" now available on Amazon.com. In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
