The 5th Avenue’s “Mrs. Doubtfire” Gets A Star: Rob McClure

September 5, 2019• byMichael Strangeways

The 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle’s premiere musical theater company, is thrilled to announce they have a star for their Holiday 2019 musical…Tony Award nominated actor ROB MCCLURE has been cast in the leading role of the world premiere of MRS. DOUBTFIRE, the musical theater adaptation of the hit film of the same name that starred Robin Williams as a madcap dad who disguises himself as a British nanny in order to be close to his kids following a bitter divorce.

McClure earned his Tony nom a few years back for starring in Chaplin; he more recently has starred as Adam (the ghostly Alec Baldwin character) in Broadway’s Beetlejuice.

Mrs. Doubtfire the Musical has a strong pedigree…it’s from the team that created the Tony Award winning Something Rotten! and will be directed by acclaimed director Jerry Zaks. The musical will debut at the 5th Avenue on November 26, 2019 for a month long run.

The musical is eagerly awaited by many fans of the original film but also has a few detractors in the LGBTQ community. Some transgender community members aren’t thrilled at the depiction of a cis gendered man casually donning female attire as a subterfuge or at jokes earned at the expense of the idea of a male presenting figure in traditional female attire/make up. Similar concerns were expressed by some in the community earlier this year with the Broadway debut of Tootsie the Musical which went on to earn several Tony Awards.

More on the big news about the Mrs. Doubtfire casting.

Rob McClure stars as Mrs. Doubtfire in the world premiere production of Mrs. Doubtfire, playing this holiday season at The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, WA

Helloooo, Seattle! Tony® Nominated Broadway Star Rob McClure to Lead the World Premiere of Mrs. Doubtfire at The 5th Avenue Theatre this Holiday Season November 26 – December 29, 2019

(Thursday, September 5, 2019—SEATTLE) The 5th Avenue Theatre is thrilled to announce that Rob McClure will star in the title role of the world premiere production of Mrs. Doubtfire this holiday season. McClure is the acclaimed actor who received a Tony Award® nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin. He is currently starring as Adam in Beetlejuice on Broadway, a role he originated at the Winter Garden Theatre, and has been seen in Broadway productions of Avenue Q, Honeymoon in Vegas, and Noises Off!. Seattle audiences will remember McClure as Nick Bottom in the national tour of Something Rotten!, a role that he also played on Broadway. Additional casting for Mrs. Doubtfire will be announced at a later date.

Playing November 26 – December 29, 2019 (press opening Friday, December 13, 2019), single tickets for Mrs. Doubtfire are on sale now at www.5thavenue.org, by phone at 206.625.1900, or in person at the Box Office at 1308 5th Avenue in Downtown Seattle.

The world premiere of Mrs. Doubtfire will be produced by The 5th Avenue Theatre this holiday season. Based upon the beloved 1993 Twentieth Century Fox Motion Picture, Mrs. Doubtfire features a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, and music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, the Tony Award-nominated team behind Something Rotten, with direction from four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks (Hello, Dolly!), choreography by Lorin Latarro (Waitress), and music supervision by Ethan Popp (Tina: the Tina Turner Musical).

When out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard loses custody of his kids in a divorce, he disguises himself as Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives.

As he gets lost in his new persona and grows closer to his kids, Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about how to be a father.

A heartfelt and hilarious story about the lengths we’ll go to for our loved ones, Mrs. Doubtfire, which is the 22nd new musical produced by The 5th Avenue Theatre,is the next big musical comedy hit for the whole family.
