Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Freestyle Love Supreme” Opens Wednesday At Seattle Rep

OK, it’s not JUST Lin-Manuel Miranda’s show…the Tony Award winning creator of Hamilton and In The Heights is ONE of the people behind FREESTYLE LOVE SUPREME, a new musical stage production currently touring the country and now opening at the Seattle Rep on Wednesday, February 16th. But, let’s face it….he’s a star and you always want a starry name in your header!

I’m not the biggest hip hop fan in the world, but this show looks fun and DIFFERENT and the energy alone is compelling me to go and check it out.

But, what exactly is “Freestyle Love Supreme”?

The title pretty much spells it out but if you need further assistance, the breathless prose from the press materials:

Before Hamilton, before In the Heights, there was Freestyle Love Supreme. Now — direct from Broadway — the original hip-hop musical phenomenon from Thomas Kail, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Anthony Veneziale arrives in Seattle. The recipient of a special 2020 Tony Award and subject of the recently released Hulu documentary We are Freestyle Love Supreme, every performance of this Grammy-nominated show brings the unexpected, as the crew takes the crowd on a freestyle, hip-hop, improvisational comedy ride. The performers take suggestions from the audience and spin them into instantaneous riffs and full-length musical numbers. See it for the first time each time — as no two shows are ever the same.

So, in other words, if you’re expecting/wanting a traditional night of musical theater with a throughline and plot and dialogue and specific characters…this ain’t the show for you. It’s more “a night of fun, comedy and hip hop music” than “Annie Get Your Gun” or “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”.

But, not necessarily in that order.
