Seattle is chock full of delicious annual holiday treats on area stages. There are traditional treats like the fucking Nutcracker at Pacific Northwest Ballet and the fucking Christmas Carol at ACT…yawn. And, to be less facetious, those are ideal choices for families and shows safe for Great Aunt Ida…but, our average audience isn’t really that family friendly and we could care less about Great Aunt Ida unless she’s one of those cool aunts who worked for Mary Quant in the 60s or was a roadie with Fleetwood Mac and has great stories to reveal about the huge amounts of cocaine consumed by Stevie Nicks…
But, I digress.
Back to our gentle reminder about FUN local holigay traditions sure to irritate any relative who gets apoplectic about “The War on Christmas”. Our favorite options are all back this year: The Dina Martina Christmas Show at Re-bar which is happening now until December 31; Ben DeLaCreme and his DeLouRue Productions’ presentation of HOMO FOR THE HOLIDAYS which we discussed a lot in a previous post, so go check THAT out…it runs through Christmas Eve. Both shows are selling out on weekends so go grab your tickets NOW!
The third popular option is one of our favorites and is the only option available for younger audiences (14+)…the very funny ladies of comedy team Dos Fallopia, the divine Lisa Koch and the divine Peggy Platt are back with their annual holiday treat, HAM FOR THE HOLIDAYS and this year it’s cutely subtitled: Close Encounters of the Pork Kind. Which may or may not mean there could be a parody of the old Steven Spielberg movie in there somewhere..but, don’t count on it.
What you can count on: a couple hours of hilarious sketch comedy from Ms Koch and Ms Platt with assistance from cohorts DJ Gommels and Michael Oaks along for the ride. Judging by the promos and photos from the show which opened last weekend, you should expect visits from some of their favorite characters including the country/western mother/daughter duo THE SPUDS and THE SEQUIM GAY MEN’S CHORUS…plus a delicious parody of some famous local citizens (see photo) including Bill Gates and Chihuly.
AND, the Ham has moved on up to a dee-luxe thee-ATER in the sky…this year’s edition of Ham for the Holidays has moved from the homey cozy comforts of the International District’s Theatre Off Jackson to the fancy pants big main stage at ACT! Good for them! We can’t wait to check them out!
Go HERE to grab your tickies…this HAM is fresh and juicy through December 22nd!
