The 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle’s premiere musical theater company, is thrilled to announce they have a star for their Holiday 2019 musical…Tony Award nominated actor ROB MCCLURE has been cast in the leading role of the world premiere of MRS. DOUBTFIRE, the musical theater adaptation of the hit film of the same name that starred Robin Williams as a madcap dad who disguises himself as a British nanny in order to be close to his kids following a bitter divorce.
McClure earned his Tony nom a few years back for starring in Chaplin; he more recently has starred as Adam (the ghostly Alec Baldwin character) in Broadway’s Beetlejuice.
Mrs. Doubtfire the Musical has a strong pedigree…it’s from the team that created the Tony Award winning Something Rotten! and will be directed by acclaimed director Jerry Zaks. The musical will debut at the 5th Avenue on November 26, 2019 for a month long run.
The musical is eagerly awaited by many fans of the original film but also has a few detractors in the LGBTQ community. Some transgender community members aren’t thrilled at the depiction of a cis gendered man casually donning female attire as a subterfuge or at jokes earned at the expense of the idea of a male presenting figure in traditional female attire/make up. Similar concerns were expressed by some in the community earlier this year with the Broadway debut of Tootsie the Musical which went on to earn several Tony Awards.
More on the big news about the Mrs. Doubtfire casting.
