Theatre 22’s “Or,” Takes The Stage At Green Lake This Weekend

There’s some new theater to check out: our lovely friends at Theatre 22 have a brand spanking new show debuting this week at the Bathhouse Theater at Green Lake (the home of Seattle Public Theater). The LGBTQ+ theater company is producing “OR,” the “hilarious, smart, literary farce” by Liz Duffy Adams.

It’s a VERY timely production…it’s set in 1666 Restoration London after the end of a disastrous dictatorship and a plague that has ravished the population but now the theaters are back open and there’s a beloved new leader in charge….

Sound familiar?

In the case of “Or,” it’s about real people like spy/playwright Aphra Behn, naughty actress/royal mistress Nell Gwynne and “merry monarch” Charles II plus a whole lot of other historical characters but all played by only three actors. In the immortal words of their press release it’s a:

…buoyant ode to the resilience of women, the wonder of creativity, the joy of sexuality, and the healing power of laughter…

What more can you ask for in a night of entertainment? It’s a play about spies, court intrigue, sneaky plots and backstabbing rascals…it’s like a peek behind the scenes at Buckingham Palace TODAY!!!

And, some of you local theater lovers might remember this play from a very successful production at Seattle Rep several years ago. It also has a terrific local cast headed by Theatre 22’s artistic director Corey McDaniel and Alanah Pascual and starring Hazel Rose Gibson as Aphra Behn. The production is directed by award winning local director Julie Beckman and features some gorgeous design work.

Or, opens this Friday, April 29th for a month long run at the Green Lake Bathhouse Theater in North Seattle, and wrapping up on Sunday, May 22nd. Like many live theater companies, Theatre 22 is still requiring proof of Covid-19 vaccination or proof of a recent negative test to gain entry and masks are still required for audience members.

About the Author: Michael Strangeways

As the Editorial Director/Co-Owner, Michael Strangeways writes, edits and does about a million other jobs for Seattle Gay Scene, Puget Sound's most visited LGBTQ news, arts and entertainment website now celebrating its 14th year as a media outlet. A semi-proud Midwesterner by birth, he's lived in Seattle since 2000. He's also a film producer who would like you to check out the Jinkx Monsoon documentary, "Drag Becomes Him" now available on Amazon.com. In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
