Queer Theater To Check Out After Pride: ArtsWest Returns To “Hedwig & The Angry Inch” on June 28th

June 6, 2023• byMichael Strangeways

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the alternative rock musical that has transfixed LGBTQ+ audiences for nearly 25 years now…including Seattle where one of the first productions outside NYC was performed to a huge success with the late and very much missed Seattle theater star Nick Garrison starring as the iconic East German relunctant transsexual turned rock and roll goddess. Garrison starred in two long running productions at the also much missed venue, Re-bar and then in 2013, RuPaul’s Drag Race star/local drag legend Jinkx Monsoon starred in a much grander production at The Moore Theatre for the since shuttered Balagan Theatre company.

Five years ago, West Seattle’s ArtsWest theater company tried their own hand with the material with their production starring Nicholas Japaul Bernard which also wowed local audiences. Now, ArtsWest returns to a show that sold them a lot of tickets for June/July of 2023 with Bernard reprising as Hedwig.

From the press release:

The off-Broadway smash-hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the electrifying story of Hedwig, a German emigrant who suffered a botched sex-change operation, as she travels the country in hopeless romantic pursuit of her former lover. First a hit on stage and again on screen, John Cameron Mitchell’s hard-rock tale of transformation has earned critical acclaim and a legion of fans across the world.

Director Eddie DeHais and the production team have been answering the question: How does HEDWIG speak to the current moment and how can it be authentically representative of the intersectionality of the artists involved?

Alongside Bernard, this production of HEDWIG features powerhouse vocalist and performer Kataka Corn in the role of Yitzahak as well as Seattle-based multimedia artist Michael B. Maine portraying the Angry Inch.

“It’s been thrilling to watch Nick and Eddie re-examine what this classic work has to offer to our moment, and to watch the team create a whole new world for Nick’s Hedwig to inhabit.”

– Mathew Wright, Artistic Director

As the Editorial Director/Co-Owner, Michael Strangeways writes, edits and does about a million other jobs for Seattle Gay Scene, Puget Sound's most visited LGBTQ news, arts and entertainment website now celebrating its 14th year as a media outlet. A semi-proud Midwesterner by birth, he's lived in Seattle since 2000. He's also a film producer who would like you to check out the Jinkx Monsoon documentary, "Drag Becomes Him" now available on Amazon.com. In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
