We reported a couple weeks back that Channing Tatum was teaming up with filmmaker Steven Soderbergh to film Magic Mike, a film loosely based on Tatum’s real life experiences as a 19 year old male stripper. Mr. Tatum will play the title character, Mike, an older stripper who takes a neophyte under his wing and shows him “the ropes” of stripping.
Well, they’ve cast the younger stripper, the one based on the real Channing Tatum, and the filmmakers have cast rising young Hollywood studlet, 21 year old British actor, Alex Pettyfer, best known for this spring’s dud I Am Number Four. Some Hollywood insiders have questioned Pettyfer’s star potential; the low box office returns for his films and a reputation for being a bit of diva have dampened the studio’s enthusiasm for the once promising new piece of beefcake. Getting cast in a high profile role in a Soderbergh film with a genuine rising star like Tatum gives the young actor another chance to make good. It also won’t hurt that a film about male stripping is sure to get a lot of media attention from both gay and female specific media outlets. Something about nearly naked movie studs stripping down to Top 40 songs tends to generate a bit of buzz…
