Bad Blood? A Conversation about the FDA Ban on Gay Blood
February 23, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
After the tragic Orlando massacre at Pulse Nightclub, our communities rallied to give the survivors a precious resource, their own blood. Thousands of us lined up at blood banks across the country, just for many to be turned away. Why? Sexually active gay men are banned from donating blood, per FDA regulations.
What is this ban about? What is the history and what is the future? How is this ban rooted in discrimination and how is it rooted in science? Join the conversation at Bad Blood?, featuring local gay activists Phil Bereano and Christopher Peguero, and Dr. Aubuchon of Bloodworks Northwest. There will be a panel discussion followed by an open forum.
An outspoken academic and community activist, Phil Bereano has a record of exploring the social ramifications of technologies. He is a University of Washington Emeritus Professor and was a co-founder of ACT/UP Seattle.
Christopher Peguero is a longtime social justice activist. He is currently the Environmental Equity Advisor for Seattle City Light and a Board Member at Gay City. Chris is also involved with SEqual, City of Seattle LGBTQ employees for Equality.
Dr. Aubuchon is the President and CEO of Bloodworks Northwest, a blood bank and medical research institute headquartered in Seattle, Washington that serves 90 hospitals in western Washington and Oregon.
