Community Art Building & Ancestor Celebration Picnic
July 13, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Early this year, Timothy White Eagle received a commission from The AMP to create public art in honor of our AIDS Ancestors. He created 7 ancestor portraits and hung them around the Chinese Scholar tree at the NW corner of Cal Anderson Park. A few nights later, Timothy’s work was ripped down and stolen.
Together we will celebrate our ancestors and the vibrant lives they live, often in and around Capitol Hill. We will picnic, share food and stories, and invite all to join community in creating a new work of art. Together will will tie thousands of ribbons to fence in the shape of empty frames. These frames are our way of remembering those who were here once in this city and lost to the plague.
This is our response to vandalism, to create a new piece which is almost impossible to vandalize: 1000’s of ribbons tied onto the fence. It is a community action of honoring our collective past and a gesture in the face of hate.
WHERE: Northwest corner of Cal Anderson Park near the Scholar tree
MATERIALS TO BRING: Old ribbons/old fabric which can be ripped easily into strips, and scissors.
WHAT ELSE TO BRING: Whatever you need to relax and be comfortable in the park, and plate, fork, napkin, and food to share. This is a pass around pot luck, so while we are all lounging on our blankets we will be passing food around. Bonus points awarded for bring food that was a favorite of one of your ancestors.
WHAT TO WEAR: Bright, festive, and lively attire encouraged.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Food, sharing and crafting. This is a celebration, we will have moments of remembrance and moments of revelry and all of us working together to create this new work of art.
