The Light in the Piazza takes place in Italy in the summer of 1953. Margaret Johnson, the wife of an American businessman, is touring the Tuscan countryside with her daughter, Clara. While sightseeing, Clara loses her hat in a sudden gust. As if guided by an unseen hand, the hat lands at the feet of Fabrizio Naccarelli, who returns it to her. This brief episode sparks an intense romance between them. Margaret, extremely protective of her daughter, attempts to keep Clara and Fabrizio apart, and you’ll have to join us September 14-22 to discover why.
The Light in the Piazza went on to Broadway to win 6 Tony Awards and 5 Drama Desk Awards. There’s simply no other musical quite like it in its complexity, ambition, and beauty. To bring this masterpiece to life for you, we’ve assembled an amazing cast of Seattle’s finest talent, and we’ve arranged another homecoming as well.
We’re thrilled to welcome a new director to the Showtunes family. Piazza will be directed by Kelly Kitchens, Co-Artistic Director of Seattle Public Theatre and an acclaimed director of theatre and opera. She is the perfect voice to bring this unique work to life. She’ll be teamed with our own Associate Artistic Director Nathan Young as Music Director.
