Comedian/actress Geri Jewell, best known for playing “Cousin Geri” on beloved 80’s sitcom The Facts of Life has a new book coming out, I’m Walking As Straight As I Can, and the book isn’t the only thing “coming out”. The clever titling of the book not only refers to her medical condition, as a woman with Cerebral Palsy, but also her life as a lesbian.
Ms Jewell became the first disabled actress on a prime time television show, with her recurring role on NBC’s The Facts of Life playing snooty Blair’s cousin, a young woman with cerebal palsy who wanted a life as a stand up comedian. Despite only appearing on the show a handful of times, Cousin Geri made a big splash, and while some of the attention could be mean spirited, overall the reaction was positive. But, life wasn’t always easy for the actress, and her new memoir explores her life after the fame of Cousin Geri had faded away, and the years of financial hardship and a failed marriage before her emergence as an out gay woman.
Congrats to Geri Jewell for breaking down another closet door!
But, you know there are millions of gay women out there still hoping that Nancy McKeon’s Jo is a mullet wearing, Harley driving, soft ball playing, lentil stew eating Lady Loving Lady…
