Stuff to Do. 4/7/11: Some naughty “Maids” at NWFF/Snackhole returns/Spring Thaw kicks off.

April 7, 2011• bySeattle Gay Scene

Great Film...Scary Poster...Glenda Jackson should sue.

You gotta have a gimmick…or, so says Stephen Sondheim in the musical Gypsy, and Three Dollar Bill Cinema DOES have a gimmick (ie, theme) for this year’s Spring film series, “Outlaw: Jean Genet on Film” which features four films based on the work of the acclaimed queer writer, Jean Genet. First up, tonight Thursday April 7, is The Maids, the 1975 film version of Genet’s  1947 play directed by Christopher Miles and starring Glenda Jackson and Susannah York as two unhappy maids who fantasize about all sorts of naughty things, including a little lady on lady lust and killing their unpleasant employer. Fun Fact #1: The play was loosely based on the true story of the Papin Sisters, who were actual bio sisters in an (alleged) incestuous relationship who did brutally murder their employer. The 1933 crime shocked, horrified and titillated the world and it led to a number of artistic interpretations of the event including plays, films, books and works of art. Fun Fact #2: Glenda Jackson, one of the most honored actresses of the 1970’s (she won two Oscars) gave up the acting life in 1992 to run for Parliament and won, and has since served as the Member from Hampstead and Kilburn for the last 20 years, narrowly winning re-election in 2010. Sad Fact: Susannah York, the beautiful blond British actress known for her roles in They Shoot Horses, Don’t They, The Killing of Sister George (another lesbian role) and as Superman’s mom in the Christopher Reeve starring film of 1978, passed away earlier this year at age 72 from bone marrow cancer.

The Maids screens tonight, April 7, at Northwest Film Forum at 7:30pm. Note that advance ticket sales are CLOSED but tickets are still available at the door.

Other fun options for the evening include the return of the insanity known as “Snackhole”. Join hostess Jackie Hell and her cast of musical and comedy talents (including Jinxx Monsoon, Ade, Phoebe Fondue, live band Secret Shoppers and DJ Nark) for a junk food night of frivolity at The Comet. It’s only $7 and the show starts at 9pm.

All de Bears in town are already gearing up for the start of the annual “Spring Thaw” event weekend, hosted by the Northwest Bears. It all starts TODAY/TONIGHT, with a pizza party at Piecora’s from 6pm to 8pm, followed by Beareoke at The Cuff Complex from 8pm to Midnight. Things start heating up on Friday with a full day’s worth of event that ends with UnderBear at The Seattle Eagle. More fun follows on Saturday and Sunday, and it all wraps up Sunday night at The Baltic Room with Sweat-ea (read it as SWEAT-TEA) the big closing party put on by Two Knights Events with DJ George Delmar. It’ll be hot, sweaty and very hirsute. And, in this frigid spring weather, we need some of that…
