Seattle Gay Scene contributor and local filmmaker/artist Wes Hurley just sent over his list of must see films for the 17th Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival going on NOW through Sunday, October 21st. We very much approve of his choices…check them out.
1) Confessions of a Teenage Rumpot: The Underground Movies of Mike and George Kuchar
The wonderfully quirky Kuchar brothers made some of the best underground cinema of the last century. They’ve inspired filmmakers like John Waters and Guy Maddin. It’s such a special treat to be able to view these rarely-seen low-budget gems on the big screen and meet Mike Kuchar in person. Sunday, October 14th at 4PM at the Northwest Film Forum. To learn more about Kuchar’s legacy, check out Jennifer Kroot’s delightful documentary “It Came From Kuchar” – it’s out on DVD.
2) Satan’s Angel: Queen of the Fire Tassels
Queer neo-burlesque is as Seattle as fair-trade coffee shops. And here’s a story of a queer burlesque pioneer – Angel Walker aka Satan’s Angel. I’ve seen this fabulous woman perform live and I can’t wait to watch her documentary, directed by Joshua Dragotta. How did this talented gay woman navigate her unconventional life during the era of male entitlement and institutionalized misogyny? What does she think of the modern burlesque scene that’s pretty much run by feminists and queers? I can’t wait to find out. Saturday, October 13. 9:30 PM at the Northwest Film Forum.
3) Mommy is Coming
Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman is the staple of every women studies, ethnic studies, gender studies and queer studies course in the US. If you went to college, you’ve probably seen it 3 billion times. Her newest film is apparently both German and pornographic. I hope it’s edgy, irreverent and surprising in the best tradition of early queer cinema before it was hijacked by vacuous soft-core trash starring waxed Abercrombie & Fitch rejects. Sunday, October 14th at 9:30pm at NWFF.
4) Mr Wrong with David Schmader’s Commentary
This year, I finally saw one of David Schmader’s beloved screenings of Showgirls. I laughed so hard, it hurt. But talking through a bad drama is not the same as making fun of terribly-miscast (or NOT) and still-closeted Ellen DeGeneres. I hope Mr Schmader lives up to my very very high expectations. Either way, what’s more adorable than Ellen DeGeneres when she still thought she could pass? Saturday, October 20th at 9:30pm at Central Cinema.
5) North Sea Texas
Coming of age stories always seem more intriguing with subtitles. Monday, October 15 at 9:15pm at the Egyptian.
6) The World’s Most Fashionable Prison
Project Runway + Prison in Singapore = LOVE! Wednesday, October 17th at 5:45pm at NWFF.
Editor’s Note: Mr. Hurley is too modest to list his own film, the locally made “Waxie Moon in Fallen Jewel” starring Waxie Moon and a bevy of local performers. Tickets are going fast for the screening on Friday, October 19th at 9:45pm at Pacific Place Cinemas. The after party will be off the hook as well…it’s at Culture Club at 411 Union Street at 11:30pm.
