It’s getting a ton of media coverage on the Intertubes. Singer Robin Thicke originally stirred up some controversy with this new song and video for “Blurred Lines” with criticism that it’s kinda sexist and kinda says “rapey” sex situations are cool. Rapey sex CAN be fun but it has to be consensual rapey role playing and not actual, “I’m gonna f*ck you without your consent/knowledge” otherwise it actually IS rape. Tricky line to toe.
Some Seattle based performers and artists decided that “Blurred Lines” was ripe for parody/examination. The boylesque troupe Mod Carousel, (The Luminous Pariah, Trojan Original and Paris Original) teamed up with talented female artists, Sydni Deveraux, Caela Bailey, and Dalisha Phillips to record and film a gender swapped version of the song. From the YouTube description of the project:
It’s our opinion that most attempts to show female objectification in the media by swapping the genders serve more to ridicule the male body than to highlight the extent to which women get objectified and does everyone a disservice. We made this video specifically to show a spectrum of sexuality as well as present both women and men in a positive light, one where objectifying men is more than alright and where women can be strong and sexy without negative repercussions.

Naturally, there are people who love this project and also dumbheads who enjoy sniping about it, with comments complaining about the make-up worn by the men; their perceived sexuality and even the gender orientation of Sydni Deveraux. (For the record, Trojan Original is straight and Ms Deveraux is not transgender but a cis female…)
Personally, we’re not fans of Robin Thicke or his music but we ARE huge fans of this video parody. It’s terrific!
And, if you’re a fan of the men of Mod Carousel (and, why wouldn’t you be? They are ridiculously talented…and zexy!) AND a fan of Ms Deveraux (also ridiculously talented and zexy) then you can check them all out at the Jewelbox Theater at the Rendezvous, 2322 2nd Avenue in Belltown, this Thursday, July 25th for their show, “SeaMen: A Maritime Boylesque Cabaret.
