Not only does Russell Tovey play a cheating douchebag on HBO’s hit series Looking, he’s also quite the schmuck in real life. First and foremost, you should know that Mr. Tovey is an openly gay actor who stars in the 30 minute series about gay men in today’s San Francisco. Recently, in an interview with The Guardian, Tovey said he thanks his dad for not allowing him to become a fierce, femme homosexual man.
“I feel like I could have been really effeminate, if I hadn’t gone to the school I went to. Where I felt like I had to toughen up,” Tovey said, since his father wouldn’t let him to go to a ‘theater school. “If I’d have been able to relax, prance around, sing in the street, I might be a different person now. I thank my dad for that, for not allowing me to go down that path.”
What path might that be, Russell?
Certainly, he’s entitled to his opinion, but internalized homophobia isn’t cute. This just makes the case for #TeamRichie fans much more stronger. I personally didn’t think I could loathe a character more than Jonathan Groff’s insufferable Patrick – but condragulations, Russell… that prestige is now yours.
